As an AD, I constantly remind our coaches what a captain really is. It is not always your best player, even though that is the ideal. It is the player who lives out your program’s culture every single day. The one who holds teammates accountable, shows up and works, puts the team first, and does the little things right when no one is watching. A captain is not just a talented kid who makes plays. It is the standard everyone else should follow.

The best routines are invisible. They don’t scream “look at me”—they quietly make the hard stuff easier to do. Great performers don’t chase complexity. They refine simplicity until it becomes second nature.

Being patient with yourself is part of the grind.

One key differentiator for elite performers? They don’t see it as a sacrifice. Going to bed early, skipping the party, putting in hours of practice... That’s not giving something up. It’s living in alignment with what they care about most.

Once you've won any kind of team championship, you quickly realize it was never about the trophy. It was always about the journey you took with the team. That's all you really remember as time passes. The laughs. The tears. The early mornings. The late nights. The failures. The victories. I think the best part though--that one kid that struggles all season to overcome obstacles only to show up big when they're needed most. That's a different kind of joy...The kind that makes your heart melt and reminds us why we coach in the first place. Hits you right in the feels doesn't it?

Sometimes disappointment is good. It's a signal that you care. That you are invested. The key lies in how you respond to the disappointment, not in feeling it.

🚨ATHLETES/PARENTS🚨 Most athletes are D2/D3. Accept that earlier. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS! Keep striving and working for D1 for sure if that is your dream… But do not EVER close the door on other options… especially if there is any form of uncertainty.

To have a long athletic career, you need to love the process. When times get hard, it’s your love of the game that keeps you going.
