High school players and parents… here’s the reality of recruiting. College coaches evaluate size first. Height, weight, and frame matter at every level of college football. Start by being honest and set realistic expectations about where you fit. If you meet the size standards, you still have to produce. Big players are everywhere. A lot of recruiting opportunities start with a high school coach advocating for one of his players. Making calls. Driving kids to camps. Pushing their film to the right programs. That work doesn’t get much attention. But it changes lives.

Most families think recruiting is about getting attention. College coaches think differently. They ask: Can he help us win? Can he develop? Is he the right level right now? Does the timeline fit? Exposure gets you seen. Fit gets you offered. Details in profile.

I’ve sat in recruiting meetings at every level of college football. Nobody asks, “How many followers does he have?” They ask: Does he project? Can he develop? Is he a fit for our level? Can he help us win? That’s what evaluation is.

I’ve coached more NFL camp players who started at JUCO, D2, and FCS than during my five FBS stints. Fit and development matter more now than ever in the portal era.
