Ghana's Supreme Court has upheld the path for one of the world's most extreme anti-LGBTQ laws, clearing the way for the "Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act, 2024." This law threatens up to 3 years in prison simply for identifying as LGBTQ or being an ally. It also mandates the reporting of LGBTQ identities, forcing medical professionals, development and humanitarian organizations, and corporations to violate ethical standards. Founder of @RightifyGhana, @Ebenezer_Peegah gave an update on Ghana's recent election, international advocacy, and Ghana's anti-LGBT bill sharing, "We had an unprecedented election year like the United States because, for the first time, LGBT was on the agenda."

Outright's Program Manager for the GLIDE Initiative, Whitney Pfeifer, expressed, "Democracy doesn't end or begin with an election and again doesn't end or begin at the ballot box." Also citing that "79% of respondents in our survey observed an increase in anti-LGBTIQ rhetoric and violence" in the run-up to their election this year. 🗳️

2024 was the Year of Elections. So how did LGBTIQ people fare? For the final #OutSummit2024 panel, we tackled this question head-on. 🧵

“If we are all being attacked by the same groups, then we all need to work together because we are all defending the same principles and concepts,” pinpointed @AlbertoBelaunde, Outright’s Co-Director of Queer Legal Futures, discussing how intersectional LGBTIQ work already is and the need to increasingly broaden our coalitions.

“Soft power is the most significant piece which will be most felt under a different administration,” shared ED Maria Sjödin about U.S. Foreign Policy, also noting, “We can’t just speak to the people we know and have identified as allies, we have to talk to a wider audience and make the argument that these rollbacks are damaging for all kinds of reasons.”

Closing out the panel, @lilit_mart, founder of @RightSideNgo, stated, “I have two goals, one local goal - to advocate for legal gender recognition by highlighting humanity and resilience. And a global goal -  to establish a framework for other countries and encourage others to use their voices, especially young trans women.”

“By grounding our messages in shared values such as family, community, [etc.] When people hear directly from those who are affected, it can break down issues and make them more real. Personal stories have the ability to make a personal connection,” reminded @marukyan_aida
