When @asherperlman got the call to be Playboy's cartoonist in residence, he went digging through the magazine's archives. He found no reason to adjust his approach. "As far as I'm concerned," Perlman says, "funny is funny." Cartoons have been integral to this magazine since its 1953 debut. Shel Silverstein, Jules Feiffer, Gahan Wilson, and Buck Brown are among the luminaries who've contributed over the years. But never before has one artist been responsible for every cartoon in an issue. "It's a gig and an honor," Perlman says with a laugh. The New York-based comedian and Late Show with @colbertlateshow writer didn't begin cartooning seriously until 2020, when lockdown left him unable to perform. His style evolved fast: no eyebrows, dot eyes, a pendulous nose. By year's end he'd sold his first cartoon to The @NewYorker. Now he creates four to ten a day, running through stream-of-consciousness "morning pages" before heading to work. "I'm very obsessive, probably to a fault," he says. In the '60s and '70s, illustration stood shoulder to shoulder with camera pinups in Playboy.
