You are correct but not in the entirety. European states often ran colonies at a net loss, building roads, rails, ports, schools, and hospitals while private actors profited. Africa wasn't "drained" of resources it was actively using, it still holds the world's largest reserves of many minerals, oil, and arable land. The real long-term harms were the slave trade incentives (pitting tribes against each other) and those artificial borders that ignored ethnic realities, both of which predated and outlasted colonialism. Blaming today's poverty on "stolen resources" from 50+ years ago ignores why resource-rich places like Botswana (good governance) thrive while others with identical colonial history don't. Singapore and Hong Kong prove institutions and policy matter far more than past flags. Peace ✌️

1. Merchants, Companies and Plantation owners got rich. Not necessarily the states who had to protect the colonies and the sea lanes. Certainly not European workers and farmers who had to compete with slave labor and rich foreign soil and mines. 2. What resources did they take from say Africa, that the natives were using themselves? Africa remains the richest continent in natural resources. They did however indirectly encourage native warlords to enslave neighboring tribes and peoples, as the warlords could sell them to Europeans. They did artificially divide Africa, where countries were crated not based on nations and cultures, but artificial borders, which has resulted in wars and civil unrest since - and more that is actually true. The claim that Europeans "stole" resources and that Africa remains a poor continent because of it is simply false. Not being charitable is not stealing.

It wasn’t. With rare exception, colonies were unprofitable, meaning more was spent building infrastructure like roads, railways, buildings, etc. than was exported. And look at places like Singapore and Hong Kong. Both were colonies for a long time and yet they are extremely prosperous.
