Makayla Rene Settles was 18 years old with a dream. She moved to California to live with her biological father and attend college. Two days later, he got her drunk and sexually assaulted her for four hours. She did everything right. She called for help. She went to the hospital that same night. She gave her statement to police. A rape kit was performed and his DNA was found inside of his own daughter. He was arrested that same night. Five months later, Makayla died by suicide. She could not carry the weight of what he did to her. Stephen Vincent Chavez is out on bail. His next court date is April 21st at the Ventura County Courthouse, Courtroom 14 at 8:30 AM. The Ventura County DA has signaled this case may not move forward because Makayla is no longer here to testify. Her statements are on record. The DNA is on record. Her family is demanding justice.
