I have no problem whatsoever believing a 19/20 year old made Backrooms but it did feel weird to me seeing a movie set in 1990 made by someone who wasn't born until a few years after 9/11.

You all greatly underestimate the horrors of McCarthyism. Assassination attempts, mob violence, terrorism, political persecution, purges, etc. were all decisive in the weakening the Communist Party. If you ever spoke to a McCarthy victim you could never say something like this.

I'm glad that James Gunn is embracing the comics without being ashamed of where these characters come from. He's adapting the Silver Age aesthetic with all the colors, fantasy, weirdness, and surrealism to bring this DC universe to life as it always should have been.
