A new study (ICMR-NICPR & TISS) finds ~10.6% of Indian households (~20.5 million) could move up an economic class by quitting tobacco.
Poor households spend up to 6.4% of income on it. Tobacco causes ~1.35M deaths/year; cessation could cut poverty and improve health.

Adivasis who migrate to Telangana's cities become more deprived than those who stay in villages. Their backwardness score rises by 10 points in urban areas.
Caste discrimination at places of worship more than doubles in cities compared to villages, from 3.8% to 8.2%.
30% of urban private sector professionals are upper caste. Adivasis account for 5%.
The city promised to dissolve caste. The data shows it gave caste a new address.
