With the arrival of nice weather, we have been receiving complaints about e-bikes, dirt bikes, and minibikes operating on the sidewalks and streets. These bikes have become extremely popular with kids, but unfortunately, they are only legal to ride on the sidewalks or streets if they have functional pedals (like a normal bicycle). If there are no pedals, they are ILLEGAL to ride on a public roadway or sidewalk. See the information in the attached photos for information about e-bikes, mini-bikes, dirt bikes, and other similar vehicles.

Today we have the honor of celebrating an incredible career and an even more remarkable man. In February 2000, Officer John Lowery joined the Bellevue Police Department after retiring from a full career in the United States Air Force. For many, retirement is the finish line. For John, it was simply the start of a new chapter of service. He brought with him the discipline, integrity, and quiet strength forged in the military, and he poured it right back into the Bellevue community. Over the past 26 years, John served in nearly every corner of the department: Patrol Officer, Community Policing Officer, Motor Officer, Bicycle Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Honor Guard member, and accident investigation instructor and reconstructionist. He didn’t just fill roles he embraced them. Whether mentoring a new officer, standing solemnly with the Honor Guard, or helping a family on one of their worst days, John showed up fully, every single time. Along the way, he received the Lifesaving Award, the Meritorious Service Award, and countless letters of appreciation not only from citizens, but from dispatchers, supervisors, fellow officers, and even individuals he arrested. That kind of respect isn’t handed out lightly. It’s earned through fairness, consistency, and genuine care for people. Those who worked beside him will remember his steady presence. Those he helped will remember his kindness. And all of us will remember the example he set professionally, hardworking, thoughtful, and always grounded in service. On behalf of the City of Bellevue and everyone at the Bellevue Police Department, “Thank you”, Officer Lowery, for 26 years of unwavering dedication. Your legacy here is lasting, and your impact is real. Enjoy your well-earned retirement, John. You’ve more than earned this next chapter.
