@Peston A member of my family runs Whitehall's vetting process for all senior civil servants and senior military officers, each one carried out before an appointment is confirmed. They say it is inconceivable that Starmer or Lammy did not know that Mandelson had failed his vetting.

I am delighted to report that the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury issued a written Ministerial Statement to Parliament yesterday announcing that they will abolish the Carbon Price Support (CPS) tax explained in my Substack below.
It is a very destructive tax and has made UK industry uncompetitive even relative to EU manufacturers, let alone Asian ones.
The bad news is that this won't happen until April 2028, and the rate will remain at £18 per tonne. By this time, the UK will be lucky to have any industry left to pay the CPS.
But a win is a win, and it will give the next government one less tax to reverse.
