☦️🙏🏻‼️ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING OF BELGRADE – 6 APRIL 1941 — The Struggle of David and Goliath — 🖤 On this day, 6 April 1941, in the early hours of a peaceful Sunday morning, while the people of God were preparing for prayer, Nazi Germany, without a declaration of war, launched a savage attack on the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Belgrade, which had been declared an open city just three days earlier (undefended and without military protection), was suddenly engulfed in fire and iron at 6:30 a.m. In wave after wave, more than 480–500 German aircraft bombed the capital in the infamous operation called “Operation Punishment” (Unternehmen Strafgericht). For three days (6–8 April), Belgrade was subjected to horrific destruction. Between 2,200 and 4,000 people were killed — mostly civilians: women, children, and the elderly caught in their sleep. One of the greatest losses was the complete destruction of the National Library of Serbia on Kosančićev Venac. In the flames disappeared: • around 300,000 books • more than 1,300 medieval manuscripts • priceless collections from the time of the holy Nemanjić dynasty This remains one of the greatest cultural crimes ever committed against the Serbian people. The same Christian Serbia experienced this horror three times in one century: • 1914 – Austro-Hungary bombed Belgrade at the start of World War I. • 1941 – Nazi Germany razed Belgrade to the ground. • 1999 – NATO (led by the USA and Germany) bombed Serbia for 78 days, deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, hospitals, bridges, and using depleted uranium munitions. And how did the other republics and peoples behave in 1941? • Slovenia quickly welcomed the Germans as “liberators” and soon declared independence under the protection of the Reich. • Croatia – on 10 April, the Ustaše proclaimed the Independent State of Croatia in Zagreb and enthusiastically joined the Germans. • Muslims in Bosnia – a large part immediately sided with the Ustaše and formed the infamous Handžar Division (13th SS Division). • Albanians from Kosovo formed SS divisions and the “Balli Kombëtar”, and under German-Italian protection carried out expulsions and mass killings of Serbs. While Serbia bled under bombs and later under occupation, others quickly adapted to the new masters and often actively participated in the dismemberment of Yugoslavia and the terror against Serbs. In that unequal struggle, like David against Goliath, it was once again proven that strength does not lie in numbers and weapons, but in truth, faith, and willingness to sacrifice. Today, with deep reverence and prayerful silence, we remember all the innocent victims of the bombing of Belgrade in 1941. MAY THEY NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. MAY IT NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.
