I am pleased to welcome to Ukraine the President of Moldova, @sandumaiamd. We value this visit on such a meaningful day, when we remember the Chornobyl disaster and the colossal solidarity and selflessness of our people, which made it possible to protect our country and our entire region, all of Europe and the world from an even greater radiation catastrophe. Today, Maia and I focused primarily on issues of security, our cross-border cooperation, the protection and development of infrastructure and energy, and we also had a very substantive discussion on our shared path toward the European Union. We are now working to ensure that all six clusters are opened as soon as possible and that EU membership becomes our shared success – for Ukraine, Moldova, and the entire European Union. Ukraine will continue to support Moldova on security issues – in particular with regard to the Transnistrian region. We are also ready to further develop our trilateral formats together with Romania. I personally thank Maia and all of Moldova for supporting Ukraine and for cooperation that strengthens our entire region.

Today, EU ambassadors endorsed the establishment of the  Ad Hoc Working Party for the drafting of Montenegro’s Accession Treaty. 🇲🇪 This has been a priority for the Cyprus Presidency and sends a powerful signal that accession is within reach for enlargement partners. We remain committed to supporting #Montenegro on its path towards EU membership. #EUEnlargement

75 years ago, the Treaty of Paris was signed, establishing the European Coal and Steel Community. 🇧🇪🇫🇷🇮🇹🇩🇪🇳🇱🇱🇺 joined forces and chose cooperation over conflict. Born from the desire for peace after WWII, this treaty laid the foundation for the Union we know today. 🇪🇺

The success of EU enlargement runs through our cooperation with partners like the IMF, the World Bank, and the International Financial Corporation. They support our efforts in pressing forward on reforms and building competitive economies in our EU candidate countries. That's why I'm here at the IMF spring meetings in DC, and delighted to meet our partners and colleagues leading these institutions - @KGeorgieva, @WorldBankGroup, @Diop_IFC.

The @EU_Commission is a key partner in IMF capacity development, with deeply aligned strategic objectives. It is an honor to announce a new EUR 14 million contribution from DG ENEST and @MartaKosEU to support countries in their reform process toward EU accession.

Did you know that since last October, the EU has been rolling out one of the world’s most advanced border management systems? The new 🇪🇺 Entry/Exit System replaces manual passport stamping and uses biometric data to track when and where non-EU travellers enter and leave the EU. For example, out of 45 million - Croatia 🇭🇷 alone has recorded 3.6 million travellers and stopped 2,646 people without the right to enter. By next week, the system will be fully operational across all Member States - facilitating travels & strengthening the security of our citizens every day.

10 years since Brussels was attacked in a way it will never forget. Today, we think of the victims and their loved ones who still carry a loss that time cannot heal. Today, as in 2016, we stand united. In solidarity and determined to protect our common values.

On 29 August, the people of Iceland will vote on whether to restart talks on joining the EU. If Icelanders vote to go ahead, we are determined to quickly advance negotiations on Iceland’s priorities. With Foreign Minister @thorgkatrin I discussed Iceland’s specific realities.

The EU and Iceland are close friends. Our security is shared, and so are the challenges we face. Today’s signature of an EU-Iceland Security and Defence Partnership takes our relationship to the next level. This will deepen our cooperation in areas that matter for the safety of our citizens, from maritime security to the protection of critical infrastructure. This is a win for the EU and for Iceland.

Montenegro is the most advanced candidate country on the road to the EU. Today we closed another negotiation chapter, bringing the total to 14. But much work still lies ahead. Now is the moment to keep up the pace of reforms, with a strong focus on the rule of law.
