In the US (where most data focuses), weekly Catholic Mass attendance among self-identified Catholics was around 40-45% in the 1980s (per Gallup/GSS/CARA trends from the era). Today, it's about 21-24% (CARA 2023-2025 data, post-pandemic rebound). The Catholic population grew from ~50 million to ~70+ million due to immigration, but regular attendees dropped from ~20 million to ~15 million. Global trends show similar declines in Western countries.

🚨 @MehekCooke hits back at the Pope “As a Catholic, I know Just War doctrine isn’t one-sided. Trump was right to push back when the Pope called his Iran stance ‘unacceptable’ and the war ‘madness.’ Iran respects strength, not sermons.” Well said!

Go visit the gravesites of the thousands of Christians slaughtered by Islamists. We don’t live in unity. We never have. For centuries.
Pope Leo XIV@Pontifex

Communion between Christians and Muslims takes shape under the mantle of Our Lady of Africa. Here, in #Algeria, the maternal love of Lalla Meryem gathers everyone as children, within our rich diversity, in our shared aspiration for dignity, love, justice, and peace. In a world where division and wars sow pain and death, living in unity and peace is a compelling sign. #ApostolicJourney

Remarkable Pope Leo would name Algeria as an example of "shared aspiration for dignity, love, justice, and peace" when it is illegal according to Algerian law for Christians to proselytize to non-Christians.

With everything you just said, @BishopBarron, I think the Pope owes America—and many Western nations affected by mass migration—a serious apology and a moment of reflection. As a Catholic, I’m genuinely outraged. Outraged at what feels like silence and inconsistency when Christians around the world are suffering persecution and violence at the hands of Muslim and the response of the Church is to put Muslim prayer rooms in Rome. Outraged at that Catholic-linked charities and institutions have become entangled—directly or indirectly—in mass migration, where in many cases, trafficking is involved. And I’m outraged that parts of the Church appear increasingly aligned with political messaging rather than spiritual leadership—especially in moments like this, where the Pope meeting with a prominent Democratic strategist, who is not a Catholic, nor a Christian raises real questions. The Church should not be functioning as a political actor. It should be unapologetically Catholic—rooted in doctrine, tradition, evangelization, and the salvation of souls. Not drifting into policy advocacy or signaling that aligns it with one side of modern political debates. What many faithful Catholics are asking for is simple: clarity, consistency, and a Church that focuses on its mission instead of politics that are destroying the sovereignty of so many Nations.
Bishop Robert Barron@BishopBarron

The statements made by President Trump on Truth Social regarding the Pope were entirely inappropriate and disrespectful. They don’t contribute at all to a constructive conversation. It is the Pope’s prerogative to articulate Catholic doctrine and the principles that govern the moral life. In regard to the concrete application of those principles, people of good will can and do disagree. I would warmly recommend that serious Catholics within the Trump administration–Secretary Rubio, Vice President Vance, Ambassador Brian Burch, and others–might meet with Vatican officials so that a real dialogue can take place. This is far preferable to the statements on social media. I am very grateful for the many ways that the Trump administration has reached out to Catholics and other people of faith. It has been a high honor to serve on the Religious Liberty Commission. No President in my lifetime has shown a greater dedication to defending our first liberty. All that said, I think the President owes the Pope an apology.

🚨 BAIER: Do you think that when the president says it's 'hurting [Pope Leo] very badly, catering to the radical left? It's hurting the Catholic Church.' You agree with the president there? JD VANCE: "I certainly think that in some cases, it would be best for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality, to stick to matters of what's going on in the Catholic Church and let the president United States stick to dictating American public policy."
