In a seminar on “Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Schools” Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, affirmed that schools are not just places of learning, but also at the heart of mental health care.
In his address he emphasised on the following key areas:
• Schools are among the most powerful platforms for nurturing mental health and psychosocial well-being. So, the teacher becomes the first line counsellor.
• Capacity of teachers needs to be built in order to detect early warning signs of distress so that they can respond timely and sensitively. The role of school management committees in actively supporting school well-being initiatives was highlighted.
• It was emphasised that the whole of government approach is essential -— bringing health, education and social justice departments together to support the children.
• Destigmatising mental health and normalising this conversation across all schools and at all levels was stressed upon.
