In yesterday's press conference on the topic of the upcoming referendum, Premier Smith made a big fuss about political mandates, due diligence, the definition of "majority" and the will of the people. Yet, earlier this week, Premier Smith and her United Conservative Party government introduced legislation to keep Alberta on daylight time year-round starting this fall (no more “falling back” in November). This directly contradicts the results of the October 18, 2021 provincial referendum on this issue. The exact question on the ballot (held alongside municipal elections) was: “Do you want Alberta to adopt year-round Daylight Saving Time, which is summer hours, eliminating the need to change our clocks twice a year? ” - Yes (adopt permanent DST): 531,782 votes / 48.8% - No: 536,874 votes / 50.2% The No side won by roughly 5,000 votes out of more than 1 million cast. It was an extremely narrow rejection of exactly the policy that the Smith government is now pursuing. Smith has all sorts of excuses for going against our wishes. - Public opinion has shifted. - BC's recent move to end clock changes created pressure for Alberta to align. - Albertans should “live it” for a year; if it proves unpopular, the government could revisit or even put it to another vote later. At the end of the day, she's either a hypocrite, or a liar. No matter what, this sets a precedent for the UCP to ignore referendum results it dislikes.
