Inversion of the verb before the subject is a common phenomenon in English sentences.
[Normal: Subject + Verb].
[Inversion: Verb/Auxiliary + Subject].
This often appears in TOEFL, IELTS Writing & Speaking, and formal English.
1. The Most Common Inversions (Must Know)
A. After negative/limiting words at the beginning of a sentence.
Never, Rarely, Seldom, Hardly, Scarcely, Little, No sooner, Not only, Only, Under no circumstances, At no time, etc.
Example:
-Normal: I have never seen such a beautiful place.
-Inversion: Never have I seen such a beautiful place.
-Normal: She rarely complains.
-Inversion: Rarely does she complain.
-Not only she is smart, but she is also kind.
-Inversion: Not only is she smart, but she is also kind.
