I don't pretend to be a perfect parent. Some days, I have no clue what I'm doing. But what I do know is that many of us grew up without being taught how to emotionally regulate. We were told to stop crying. Be quiet. Go to our rooms. We sat alone with big feelings and heard things like, "Get over it. Life's tough."
My girls are tough, too. But they're also allowed to feel.
In this house, we sit with our emotions. We name them. We talk about them. We try to understand where they're coming from.
Empathy is like a seed. Children are born with the capacity for it. When it's nurtured, it grows. Kids who are shown empathy are more likely to show empathy to others.
So hug your littles. Kiss them often. Sit with them through the hard moments and the good ones.
The way we love them today becomes the way they love themselves and the world around them tomorrow.
