In February 2022, I was mostly shut off from social media. I lived a quiet life in a small mountain town in #Canada,raising children, fishing, gardening, and building a worm farm. Follower counts and posting weren’t something I ever thought about. Today, 21,000 people are watching our lives, our progress, and quite literally helping us survive. For those of you who are new here I am not Ukrainian by blood. I am here because I am human. And that very human need to help those in need is what brought me here. What made me stay was the fighting spirit of Ukrainians and the realization that with a little help, one person can make a very big difference. Today, I serve as a Junior Sergeant and Senior Combat Medic in a prisoner battalion. My brothers in arms are Ukrainian men who traded parole for a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. When I joined the military in 2024, I had many offers but I chose to stand with these men because I saw something others didn’t: They needed a voice. They have proven themselves to be some of the bravest infantrymen on the battlefield, fighting in the hardest battles in Donetsk oblast. But for all they have in courage and discipline, they lack what many take for granted. Imagine this: You are in prison. You make the choice to join an infantry assault battalion. You arrive at an undisclosed location, over 40km from any major population. For at least 30 days, you will live in trenches and dugouts. You haven’t even seen combat yet but on your first night, you feel the war. You train six days a week. After training, you dig and build until dark. You shower once a week. For the first month, you earn nothing while your documents are processed. Even if you had money there’s nowhere to spend it. But sometimes your commander shows up with boxes food, toothpaste, socks, underwear. And one day, a 162cm English speaking woman with the callsign “Granny” shows up with those same boxes. Some understand where it all comes from. Most never will. Because behind most of what keeps us alive: anti-drone systems, vehicles, evacuation buggies, food, thermal drones, tablets, generators, FPV controllers, goggles, tools, fire extinguishers, hygiene supplies, camo nets, Starlinks and more… …it’s me. I make posts. I make videos. I stay up late every night emailing, calling, even reaching out to YouTubers and volunteers. None of this is in my contract. I do it because they matter. Because I’ve seen what their positions look like without support. I was here from day one as a volunteer. These boys need us.
