❗️The rescue and evacuation operation for the second pilot of the F-15E Strike Eagle fighter-bomber shot down on Friday involved hundreds of American special forces soldiers, including operators from the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG), as well as other U.S. Armed Forces units and dozens of combat and transport aircraft, reports The New York Times. Senior U.S. military officials described this rescue operation as “one of the most complex and difficult in the history of American special operations.” The reasons were the difficult mountainous terrain, the pilot’s injuries, and the rapid advance of Iranian forces toward his landing site in the mountains of southern Iran. The pilot evaded Iranian pursuers for more than 24 hours, at one point climbing on foot to a ridge over 2,100 meters high. American strike aviation carried out attacks on Iranian columns to prevent them from approaching the pilot’s location. When American special forces reached the pilot, they opened suppressive fire to drive Iranian forces away from the evacuation zone, but did not engage them in direct firefight. In the final stage of the operation, after the officer had already been rescued, two HC-130J Combat King II transport aircraft that were supposed to evacuate the special forces and the rescued pilot became stuck at a remote temporary base on Iranian territory (established in a manner similar to the scheme of Operation Eagle Claw in 1980). The command decided to send three new aircraft to evacuate the personnel, while the two inoperable aircraft were destroyed by explosives so they would not fall into the hands of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
