But here’s what most players don’t realize:
If you can’t hold a real conversation, you might lose the opportunity.
College coaches aren’t just evaluating your tools — they’re asking themselves:
•Can I spend 8 hours a day with this kid?
•Will he be coachable, or shut down?
One-word answers = missed opportunities.
No personality = red flag.
Lack of clarity = confusion about goals.
And let’s be honest — for most 16-year-olds, talking to a coach on the phone is awkward. It’s basically a stranger calling you to talk about your future.
That’s why preparation matters.
•Know how to talk about yourself.
•Know what you want.
•Know how to ask questions.
The kids who stand out today won’t just be the ones throwing 90 or hitting nukes.
