This important anastomosis provides vasa nervorum supply to V2 and is another dangerous EC-IC connection to be aware of when performing internal maxillary artery embolizations, and is often enlarged as a collateral pathway and in tumors or fistulae.

In this patient with a chronically occluded internal carotid artery, the red arrow marks the artery of the foramen rotundum, an important artery connecting the distal internal maxillary artery to the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery via the inferolateral trunk.
