This is absolutely insane. The suffragettes used far more extreme tactics than Palestine Action. They planted bombs, burned down private homes and smashed up art galleries. They killed five people! Her outrageous judgement is based on absurd historical ignorance.
Saul Staniforth@SaulStaniforth

The Lady Chief Justice: Palestine Action was not a direct action civil disobedience protest group like the suffragettes, but used violence to destroy property The suffragettes burned down country houses & train stations, bombed churches & sent letter bombs to politicians.

Owning a £400,000 house with a £350,000 mortgage in the UK in 2026 means signing a 25-year contract to give the bank around £2,050 a month, in exchange for the right to maintain a building you'll spend another £4,000 a year keeping dry, warm and structurally sound. At a 5% fixed rate, the total interest over the life of the mortgage is around £264,000. The total mortgage cost ends up at roughly £614,000. The price tag on the front door says £400K. The actual cost of living in it for 25 years is closer to £750K, before council tax, repairs, insurance and the new boiler. This is what the country has been calling 'getting on the ladder.'

This is barbaric. They were not permitted to explain to the jury why they carried out the attack on the Elbit factory - which makes the weapons that kill Palestinian children. And the jury was never told they would be sentenced as terrorists. /1

There are no words to describe the shame that this is. The entire government and court system should be ashamed. In the decades and centuries to come this will be in history books as yet another disgraceful act of this government in defence of a genocidal entity.

Here’s injustice Jeremy Johnson handing down the sentences at today’s disgusting stitched up Palestine Action trial. Any faith I ever had in the fairness of the British justice system is completely is dead.

Apartheid South Africa and Nazi Germany needed compliant judges to provide a legal veneer to their darkest crimes. Judge Johnson joins their wretched company. He overturned a jury's conviction of four anti-genocide activists for criminal damage and sentenced them as terrorists instead. As one their barristers pointed out, the four defendants were initially arrested by police on suspicion of involvement in an act of terrorism. But the prosecution decided not to charge them with terrorism offences because it knew no jury would ever convict them based on the evidence. Instead the Crown held two trials: a sham one for the jury, and the real one conducted in secret by the judge. That is not justice. It is a show trial worthy of the worst tyrannical regimes.

Gut wrenching to see four young people jailed for direct action against an arms supplier to Israel. Years in prison for protesting to save lives in Gaza, with 'terrorism' used despite no jury convicting them of it. A truly dangerous attack on the right to protest.

"Judge Johnson kept the jury in the dark of his plans to sentence the four as terrorists. This is the first time in British legal history that anyone has been sentenced as a terrorist for damaging property." Please RT until this is both the 1st & last time. Thank you.

Jeremy Johnson - in 50 years time this will be the only 1.39 minutes of your life you'll be remembered for. It'll be played in genocide museums to sum up the complicity and callous brutality of the British state in the face of the slaughter of the Palestinian people - and the courage of those who opposed it.

Elon Musk can say what he likes about me but I won't stay silent whilst foreign tech billionaires, money earned off the backs of real workers, try to interfere in our democracy, incite violence in our communities and tear apart our country. Time for him to pipe down.

Richard Burgon just exposed the most glaring double standard in British policy "Imagine if this weekend in London there was a Russian real estate event selling Ukrainian land. The government would ban it immediately. Instead, we have an Israeli real estate event openly advertising the illegal sale of land in occupied Palestinian territories. The government recognizes Palestine. Why isn't this banned?"

I don’t want to hear any bullshit about “legitimate concerns” and “working class revolt” It’s working-class Black and brown people being pushed out of their homes. This is racist violence and intimidation. Don’t dress it up as anything else.

Fascism has arrived. Dress it up with whatever language you like, but when you have masked men, dressed in a uniformal order, attacking people on the street based on skin colour, any argument about concerned citizens or frustrations about government are redundant. We are here.

Emily Thornberry has today said the government has let down the Palestinian people, and allowed Israel to act with impunity. The audacity. Here she is in October 2023 refusing to condemn Israel cutting off power and supplies to Gaza. Don’t let these people rewrite history.
