The next day, Guillermo del Toro posted messages celebrating animation made by real artists, including the line “Made by humans for humans.” Many in the animation community took it as a jab at the AI project, and backlash built quickly. By May 30, Gutierrez had pulled out of the program. In a public apology, he said his intention was to spotlight the artists working on the project, not replace them, and promised to do better moving forward.
