I keep saying this: Haitians need to stop calling Port-au-Prince (PaP) “Haiti.” Today, outsiders are repeating the same idea as if it were an absolute truth. I find myself asking: why are so many people, sitting far from Haiti (in offices or on social media), offering opinions about “what’s happening in the country,” when they don’t even realize that Haiti has 10 departments and Port-au-Prince is just one part of it? And La Gonave (one Island separate from the main land ) is almost twice of the size of the Barbados, larger than Saint Lucia. Pétion-Ville is a neighborhood within the the Metropolitain Area, not the whole country. There are many other areas where life continues, where people live in relative calm. When international media define the entire country solely through gang violence in Port-au-Prince, they reinforce the same negative narrative that has persisted for years. Haiti is bigger than Port-au-Prince which +1400 smaller than Haiti @TheEconomist
