It's... WILD WEIRD! I have been helping my good friend, @AndySchuhler on his wonderful project called, Wild Weird. A turn around done to explore and sell the design of Mighty and his trusty hat, Sleepy. #andyschuhler #mattwilliames

@WarrenONeill @victor_ens @CDReferences I get what you are saying and have experienced the same. Sadly, as you know, assistant animators became strictly "final line" as they called it at Dreamworks. Less focus on drawing and more on a pretty line. I think we all miss the assistant mentality.

@MattWilliames @victor_ens @CDReferences drawing lines halfway between other lines (things like a hand slightly rotating in space, so you had to have a sense of spatial awareness to complete the inbetween properly).

@WarrenONeill @victor_ens @CDReferences Sure, this is what I do. I do think of making their lives easy as well as getting what I want communicated. However, 3rd's and favors are apart of animation and life. We should know how to do them when called upon to do them.

@MattWilliames @victor_ens @CDReferences That way, all the inbetweens left up to the assistant preceding and following that “key” are just halves, so if the assistant is a bit weak, they won’t screw up the scene.

It's live! You can go to mattwilliamesanimation.com and purchase tvpaint files of original animation I have done. Also, in the near future I will be announcing a mentorship that you can purchase at the website as well.

@WarrenONeill @victor_ens @CDReferences I hear ya on that but when you break the charts down many/most of the inbetweens do end up being halves but, if an assistant cant handle doing a 3rd/favor then they shouldn't be in animation.

@victor_ens @CDReferences @MattWilliames His timing charts look like a nightmare, though - I’d hate to be the assistant animator tasked to clean-up this scene 😬 (in school, we were taught to never animate on thirds/non-halves because it drives all the assistants/inbetweeners crazy).😵‍💫

@ArchivesK2 The ruff was animated on DW's prorprietary hand drawn animation software called PENCIL. However, there were other shots I animated entirely on paper. All you need is a peg par on your scanner, or peg hole recognition to register the drawings together.

@MattWilliames Was this rough pass animated on paper? if it is then how did you scanned the drawings so perfectly? i always have problems when it comes to scan a scene's drawings and import them in a program

Sometimes a shot you were really excited to tie down gets cut before you can finish it. I got half way through tying this down before it was considered OOP and I needed to move on to something else.

@LeviticusRott everyone "ties down" drawings differently. Mine tend to be pretty "tight" as I do not want there to be any guess work for clean up. But yes, this a "ruff" pencil test.

@MattWilliames This scene looks great. But we have to use digital hand drawn animation using graphics tablets via animation software is for the future of 2d animation because of the limitations of pencil-on-paper animation and scanned drawings.

@matthewanim64 I have done both methods and I don't see this argument being valid. I am faster on paper, scanning doesn't take long with a good auto feed scanner, etc... it's a myth that digital is always better. This is coming from someone who has made this there career the last 28 years.

@MattWilliames Can you take a photo of the whole stack of paper used? I'm generally curious how tall it is.

I think I am gonna call this test piece a wrap for now. It has more than served it's purpose. If you are interested I will be doing a Q&A about this piece over on Instagram tomorrow (Jan. 3) at 12 PM PST. See you there! #handdrawnanimation #mattwilliames

@chrisfram Hah! I left that in there on purpose, just so people knew a human being did this on paper :)

@Rigiliz Nothing that I know of is being done on paper in the west. I prefer paper because that is how I started back in the 90's. Also, the tactile quality is something that brings me joy that digital robs me of.

@victor_ens In my opinion, Klaus himself was the most difficult assignment in the film. You did it with a lot of grace and beauty, my friend!

Voice actors NEVER reach out like this. I never met Norm while I was animating Mogens but for him to reach out to me says everything about him. Enjoy Klaus tonight in honor of Norm!
Norm Macdonald@normmacdonald

@MattWilliames Saw Klaus today. Matt. Fantastic work. In animation, it is the draw that elevates comedy into art, and this is what you have done and should be very proud of.
