🌍 IGBO IN DIASPORA: CHILE EBOE-OSUJI 🖤 Born in Añara, Isiala Mbano, Imo State, Chile Eboe-Osuji became the 4th President of the International Criminal Court in The Hague in 2018, the first African to hold the position. He served a full 9 year term as ICC judge from 2012 to 2021, presiding over some of the most high profile cases in international law including the trials of senior Kenyan officials. During his presidency he personally led the effort to keep African nations from withdrawing from the court, flying across the continent to meet heads of state one on one. Before the ICC he served as Legal Advisor to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva and as senior prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. He now sits as a judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice, sworn in April 2025. He has taught law at Stanford, Harvard, UCLA and the University of Toronto. An Igbo man from Imo State. I keep getting questions like: why are you so obsessed with Deborah Samuel? The answer is simple, my people. 1. What happened to Deborah Samuel was not just about Deborah Samuel. 2. It was about all of us as Christians. 3. It was about Nigeria. 4. It was about what religion is and what it should be in Nigeria. 5. It was about the validity of our Constitution and our country. 6. It was about the injustice and attempt by a certain group of people to oppress and dominate over other using violence and any other weapon at their disposal. And I will demonstrate with a short story. On 23 July 2004, a young 21-year-old Muslim student at the University of Nsukka Enugu was in class with her classmates and friends. She made an observation that their Class WhatsApp group was meant for educational purposes and sharing important information, and as such, they should stop posting religious content in that group. She said they all had their various religious groups they could use for that. Those same classmates of hers, who were Christians, felt she had insulted their prophet Jesus and started calling her a blasphemer. In some reports, they forced her to say the words “there is no other Prophet but Jesus,” and she refused. She said she was not a Christian but a Muslim and she had the right to practice her religion and that there is no other God but Allah, and Muhammad is His prophet. There and then, they pounced on her. A few Muslim students tried to sneak her away through the back gate of the school to her home. But as the chase intensified, so did the mob of Christian students chanting “blasphemer” and calling for her death. According to the interpretation of these Christians students of the “Christian law” in Enugu, You could accuse any Muslim of blasphemy, and if enough Christians agreed, that person deserved to die. They overpowered those who wanted to save her and even threatened to kill anyone who tried to help her. They got to her house, dragged her out, and began to beat her with anything they could find. While they were beating her, she kept asking them what they hoped to achieve by taking her life. They beat her, stoned her, and burned her. All the while, they recorded it and jubilated, shouting “glory be to Jesus Christ, hallelujah,” celebrating that they had killed a “blasphemer” to the glory of their Lord Jesus Christ. After she died, those who killed her were arrested, but the Christian policeman handling the case failed to show up in court repeatedly for months. More than 40 Christian lawyers came forward to defend the students who killed Amina. Riots broke out in the east with threats that if those killers were not freed, more Muslims would die. Eventually, they were freed. The judge, who was also Christian, said there was no evidence, and the police failed to show up. In the neighboring state of Ebonyi, a Muslim woman named Aisha made a video condemning the killing of Amina by Christian students just because of religion. Immediately, the government of Ebonyi ordered her arrest, and she was jailed without bail for 18 months. Christian youths in Ebonyi traced her home, burned it down, and destroyed other Muslim properties in the vicinity. Online, many educated Christians supported the killing of Amina and even called out a former Christian vice president who was expected to contest for president in the next election, demanding he delete his tweet condemning the murder. A Christian pilot made a tweet supporting the killing of Amina, saying people should learn how to respect other people’s religion. His former employers released a statement distancing themselves from him. His baby mama filed for sole custody of their child because she could not allow her child to be around a Christian who thought it was okay to kill an innocent girl in the name of religion.
