Stroke meets CMS chronic-condition criteria, yet therapy reimbursement commonly ends at 2–3 months, despite evidence that function and skills can improve at any time poststroke. So why aren’t we practicing that type of medicine in chronic strokes? psychiatrictimes.com/view/why-arent…

Ultimately, psychiatry is two people in a room trying to better understand the world, and themselves. That requires the honest, caring exchange of ideas. If you come in with relationship problems, my job isn’t to push you to stay or leave. It’s to help you understand yourself more clearly through it. Discussion and debate are at the core of what we do, they’re the very process by which we help people understand their lives. Yet modern medicine often does them poorly. So a few colleagues and I created a psychiatry debate competition. The goal isn’t to declare winners. It’s to model the kind of rigorous, respectful dialogue our field should be built on. The first finals will be held at the APA. I also wrote an article with some of this year’s participants on the motion: “Should Accrediting Bodies Require AI for Suicide Risk Stratification in Emergency Settings?” @PsychTimes featured it on their homepage. I’d be grateful if you read it, or better yet, join us at the APA to watch psychiatry residents debate important topics with intelligence and respect.
