According to tradition, he remarked, “Turn me over—I’m done on this side.” His last words were, “It’s cooked enough now.” Saint Lawrence, one of the seven deacons of Rome, was entrusted with caring for the poor and overseeing the Church’s charitable work. During the reign of Valerian, Christians faced intense persecution because they refused to worship the Roman gods and place the state above their faith. After the execution of Pope Sixtus II, the prefect of Rome demanded that Lawrence surrender the Church’s treasures. Lawrence agreed but requested three days to gather them. Instead, he distributed the Church’s wealth among the poor. When the appointed day arrived, he presented the city’s poor, widows, and consecrated virgins to the prefect and declared, “Behold in these poor persons the treasures which I promised to show you; to which I will add pearls and precious stones, those widows and consecrated virgins, which are the Church’s crown.” Furious at the perceived insult, the prefect ordered Lawrence’s execution on a large iron grill. His courage and legendary sense of humor in the face of death later led the Church to name Saint Lawrence the patron saint of cooks, comedians, and firefighters.
