Today we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, sponsored by UNESCO. Unfortunately, this right is often violated, sometimes flagrantly, sometimes in hidden ways. Let us remember the many journalists and reporters who are victims of war and violence.

Journalism shapes peace. Access to reliable, verified information is not optional; it is fundamental to building peaceful, just and resilient societies. When information is manipulated, it fuels division and erodes trust. When it is free and truthful, it strengthens accountability, fosters dialogue and upholds human rights. Breaking good news: The Gold Helmet of Coțofenești — a key historical artifact for the people of #Romania, stolen in 2025 from the Drents Museum — has just been recovered in the #Netherlands, together with two of its three Dacian Gold Bracelets. The helmet and the bracelets had been featured since September 2025  in the @UNESCO Virtual Museum of Stolen Cultural Objects to raise awareness about the illicit trafficking of cultural property. With its return to the people of Romania, the Virtual Museum is losing its first objects and hoping more will follow soon. The search for the third bracelet is still ongoing. #UNESCO Virtual Museum of Stolen Objects was created as the only global museum in the world whose ambition is to be empty. UNESCO expresses its grave concern over recent developments affecting higher education institutions in the Middle East. @UNESCO unequivocally condemns attacks against universities and educational institutions, and rejects in the strongest terms any threats or the deliberate targeting of such institutions as means of retaliation. Educational institutions must remain spaces dedicated to knowledge and international cooperation. UNESCO acknowledges the efforts undertaken to ensure the safety and continuity of higher education and calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to fully respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, notably United Nations Security Council Resolution 2601. unesco.org/en/articles/un…
