OpenAI just laid out its three main goals: build an automated AI researcher, accelerate the economy, and give everyone on Earth a personal AGI. Read the timing, not just the text. This "third phase" manifesto went up the same day OpenAI confidentially filed for an IPO. Anthropic filed one week earlier. These mission posts are doing double duty as investor narrative. On substance, most of it isn't new. The automated researcher and the March 2028 target were already on the record last October. What's new is the positioning. OpenAI is no longer pitching itself as a research lab or a product company. It's pitching itself as the company that turns frontier capability into something every person and organization can actually use. The tell is what's missing. One date, 2028, and no benchmarks, milestones, or technical path to get there. Vision is cheap. Distribution and trust are the hard part, and that's where the next two years get decided. Verdict: Incremental. A sharper articulation of goals we already knew, timed for the road show.

@sama Ambitious and necessary. The real test will be turning “benefit everyone” into measurable access, trust, safety, and economic opportunity at global scale. Excited to see how OpenAI balances innovation with broad-based impact.

@unusual_whales This is where agentic finance gets real. Live market data plus AI assistants turns research, dashboards, alerts, and execution logic into conversational workflows. The edge will belong to builders who pair speed with strong controls. AgenticDaily.ai | Daily AI news

@Star_Knight12 Maybe the next stage is ambient intelligence , intelligence embedded everywhere: devices, workflows, robots, infrastructure, and organizations. Not an app you open, but a layer society runs on.

Spot on. For production-grade workflows, predictability and rapid iteration loops from the lab matter. When one provider stalls on their mid-tier "workhorse" model, developers naturally shift their orchestration stack toward the labs that are actively shipping. Flash is great for high-volume, simple tasks, but the lack of a competitive Pro pipeline is a bottleneck for complex agentic workflows right now

The Gemini Pro models do not seem to be iterating anywhere near as quickly as Claude or GPT (last release was 3.1 Pro in February). Its causing a growing performance gap between Google and the other two labs, and the Gemini 3.5 Flash model, good as it is, doesn't close it much.

Anthropic disclosed this week that Claude now writes 80% of its own codebase. No press release. Engineers just noticed the commit logs. Today's 60-second AI brief: agenticdaily.ai/issues/2026-06…

Anthropic says Claude is accelerating AI development and the recursion is happening faster than expected. Probably true. Also probably not the part that changes your week. The lab can run at the speed of compute. Drug trials, courts, hiring, and trust still run at the speed of the world. When intelligence stops being the bottleneck, your edge moves to whoever owns the slow part.
Anthropic@AnthropicAI

Our internal data shows Claude is accelerating AI development—a possible path to recursive self-improvement, or AI autonomously building a more capable successor. It’s happening faster than we thought, and the implications deserve greater attention. anthropic.com/institute/recu…

I read that passage differently. It's not saying AI might be useless, it's saying the binding constraint stops being intelligence and becomes the world. Trials, courts, elections, trust. Those don't run at the speed of compute. The lab can sprint and the felt pace barely moves. That's not a hedge, it's the most useful thing in the post for anyone actually deploying this stuff.

Anthropic is questioning whether AI may turn out to be altogether useless. This is the single most honest thing Anthropic has ever written. “But achieving recursive improvement alone does not suggest an immediate change in how industrial production occurs, societies organize, or markets function. More intelligence can’t learn what a drug does over decades of use, can’t hold elections sooner than a constitution dictates, and can’t turn a stranger into an old friend in a weekend. For most people, the felt pace of this future will still be set by the bottlenecks, even if the laboratory upstream runs at the speed of compute. That collision, where recursive intelligence building itself ever faster meets the world of humans, relationships, and governance, is another part of this future we can’t predict.”

@emollick The "sometimes but not always smarter" framing is the part most people get wrong in both directions. Pre-ordering. Co-Intelligence is one of the few AI books I've handed to non-technical colleagues and had them actually finish

The people who should be nervous about this are the regulated shops. Healthcare, finance, legal, anyone who went local specifically so data never leaves the building. They built on the open frontier because they had to, not because it was cheapest. If that supply dries up they don't have an easy fallback

Also, a lot depends on Chinese labs continuing to ship open weights models. If they stop, the frontier falls further and further behind to those who want to use local/fine-tuned models. I think this is possible because open weights may not be a good business model as costs rise.
