Soccer would not exist without immigrants. Immigrants play and coach the game, work in the stadiums, fill the stands, and make celebrations like the World Cup possible. Six of the players on the US Men's National Team are immigrants. We will not allow ICE or anyone else to sow fear in our communities — especially at this moment. As the world comes to our city, we will stand proudly with our immigrant neighbors and reject these attacks for what they are: an attempt to divide us.

When FIFA takes the World Cup to a particular country, they literally take over for that period. Why is America different? Why is the Host Country being allowed to get away with murder? It’s because of this compromised MORON @FIFAWorldCup He must be held accountable for the mess not America!!

I am deeply disappointed by the news that Omar Artan, Africa’s finest referee and one of the best in the world, may be unable to officiate at the FIFA World Cup due to visa-related circumstances. Omar has earned his place through talent, hard work, professionalism, and integrity. Having officiated at the highest levels of African and international football, his credentials speak for themselves. He represents not only Somalia, but also the aspirations of millions of young Africans who believe excellence should be recognized on the world stage. I remain hopeful that a solution can be found. Football is at its best when it brings people together and celebrates merit, inclusion, and opportunity. Omar, Africa and the world stand with you.

I hope Somali leaders finally recognize the power of football. This man is more famous today than all Somali leaders combined. It’s time to build a Somali football league free from politics and focused on developing talent.

The Cumar Cartan Case: A Wake-Up Call for Somalia What Garsoore (Judge) Cumar Abdulkadir Cartan is facing today should become a national wake-up call, not merely a story that dominates public discussion for a few days before fading away. The situation confronting Cartan is deeply troubling because it extends beyond one individual. He has become a symbol of personal achievement, professional excellence, and the ability of a Somali citizen to represent an entire nation on the international stage. The controversy surrounding his treatment has attracted attention across Africa and parts of the Arab world, where many have expressed concern over the obstacles he reportedly encountered while traveling to the United States on official business. What happened to Cartan should not be viewed as an isolated incident. Rather, it raises broader questions about the status, dignity, and international standing of Somali citizens. The issue should not end with temporary outrage or be addressed solely through individual solutions such as obtaining foreign passports. While many pursue alternative citizenships in search of greater mobility and opportunity, such measures do not resolve the underlying problem. Today, Somalis must confront an uncomfortable reality: the value and protection afforded to a citizen often reflect the strength, stability, and reputation of their state. Around the world, the Somali passport remains among the least powerful travel documents, and Somali citizens frequently face restrictions, suspicion, and barriers that many others do not encounter. Human beings are equal in dignity and worth, but nations earn respect through the institutions they build, the values they uphold, and the sacrifices they make to establish effective governance. A respected nation is one that possesses strong institutions, rule of law, national unity, and a government capable of protecting the rights of its people. Many of the challenges faced by Somali citizens today stem from the prolonged weakness of state institutions. Had Somalia possessed stronger and more effective governance, incidents such as the one involving Cartan might have unfolded differently. Yet it is important to recognize that governments do not emerge in isolation; they reflect the collective choices, priorities, and responsibilities of their societies. Within Somalia, citizens continue to struggle with divisions, inequality, corruption, and clan-based discrimination. These internal weaknesses inevitably affect how the country and its citizens are perceived abroad. The lesson from the Cartan case is clear. Somalis must move beyond temporary reactions and commit themselves to building a state that safeguards the dignity, rights, and interests of its citizens wherever they may be. National respect is not granted; it is earned through unity, justice, accountability, and effective governance. A dignified state emerges from a dignified people. A nation that values justice and responsibility will ultimately build institutions worthy of respect, both at home and abroad. By Dahir Alasow
