Holtec International and the Rwanda Atomic Energy Board (@RAEB_Rwanda ) have signed a Development Agreement to advance the deployment of Holtec’s SMR-300 reactors in Rwanda, marking a major milestone in the country’s vision to become a leader in advanced nuclear energy in Africa. Signed during the Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa (NEISA), the agreement supports Rwanda’s strategy to deliver reliable, carbon-free baseload power and drive long-term economic growth. The collaboration could support up to approximately 5 GW of clean energy capacity using Holtec’s SMR-300 technology — a proven, “walk-away safe” advanced reactor designed for reliability, resiliency, and flexible deployment. FULL CIRCLE: In April 1965, the U.S. launched its first and only space reactor into space. SNAP-10A was a sodium-potassium-cooled fast reactor developed as part of a @DeptofWar R&D project to power a satellite.

💡 Forty years ago last week, Millstone Power Station Unit 3 began commercial operations in Waterford, CT. As Connecticut’s only nuclear plant Millstone supplies about 47% of the state’s electricity, enough to power approximately two million homes.

The DoE will provide low-interest loans for nuclear uprate and restart projects, resulting in ~5 GW of additional US nuclear capacity by 2029. About half of that (i.e., 2.5 GW) may happen by 2027. Article link in reply. DoE analyses project 4-5 more GWs of uprates by 2035, and total, eventual uprates of ~17 GW. Nuclear plant uprates are far less expensive than building new plants, in terms of cost per GW. TBH, given current electricity prices, I thought uprate projects would not need subsidies. Indeed, past uprates added 8 GW w/o subsidies. Also, NRC is already expecting uprate applications that would yield 2.4 GW. That said, the new DoE project would result in more and sooner uprates. Also, in terms of subsidies, low-interest loans are not something to get worked up about. The cost to the government will be small.
