While current systems haven’t reached that point, researchers expect a progression from assistants to autonomous AI developers, with strong capabilities in coding, math, and R&D. However, there’s little consensus on timelines or governance, and many believe the most advanced systems may remain internal to companies or governments, rather than publicly accessible. What’s notable is the uncertainty around it. Even the people building these systems don’t agree on how fast it happens, how visible it will be, or how it should be controlled. That lack of alignment is itself a signal. When progress becomes endogenous, driven by AI improving AI. The system becomes harder to predict, measure, or regulate using traditional frameworks. This points to a deeper shift in how AI evolves. The frontier is moving from scaling models to scaling the process of discovery itself. Once AI participates directly in research loops, the pace of advancement becomes conditional on how effectively these systems can iterate, test, and refine their own architectures.
