I almost ignored the call. Unknown number, 7:12pm. I was tired, not in the mood for “network provider promo” or “you’ve won something.” It rang again. I answered. “Hello… is this Elizabeth?” My heart skipped a beat. Only people who *knew me* would say my name like that. “Yes… who is this?” Silence. Then a gentle laugh. “It’s me. From 2019… You helped me.” I searched my memory thoroughly. Nothing. “You paid for my exam fee,” she said. “WAEC. I was crying that day.” Then it suddenly came back to me. Rainy afternoon. A girl I barely knew. I almost walked past her. “I just wanted to tell you… I graduated today.” I didn’t realise I was crying until she said, “Thank you for not ignoring me that day.” After the call ended, I sat there for a long time. Because the truth is… I almost *did* ignore her that day. Sometimes, the smallest act can become someone else’s turning point.
