Cory Doctorow NO LONGER ON TWIT TER
Let's start with the best thing I saw all week: a 3D-printed, spring-loaded, clockwork chess pawn that uses a magnet to sense when it has reached the end of the board and SPROING! turns into a queen.

It's Saturday and I'm on a book tour, and the world is in chaos, and there are more links to write about than I could fit in to this week's newsletter, so time for a cubic linkdump, the 27th such: pluralistic.net/tag/linkdump/ 1/

Our flag - a powerful reminder of Canada’s shared values, our tough resilience and our unique national identity. Proud to fly it internationally and beyond. (first unfurled 60 years ago today)

President Trump seems to think he can suspend the laws of the United States, of international trade, and of economics. The American Congress and US courts will decide for themselves how they will address these violations of Presidential powers. President Trump’s actions will hurt millions of Americans workers and all American consumers. And after promising to reduce inflation, his actions will send it and interest rates up. In Canada, we understand the laws of economics. That’s why we will be masters of our own house in building the strongest economy in the G7.

Trump, Elon, and their allies are calling all spending they don't like "fraud." Spending on things like consumer protection, Social Security, and medicine for sick kids. But just calling something "fraud" doesn't make it so. Here are the actual facts 🧵⤵️

A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, 2/

23 January 1943 | Colonel Jan Karcz (no. 23569) approached the camp manager of Auschwitz I Hans Aumeier. He asked to be released to the camp after a six-month sentence at the Penal Company. On the same day, he was imprisoned in a bunker in Block 11 & two days later he was shot. Jan Karcz was one of the leaders of the resistance in Auschwitz. In 1942, at the request of capt. Witold Pilecki, he took the lead of the Military Organization Union at the Birkenau camp. Learn about the resistance activities in the camp: lekcja.auschwitz.org/en_16_ruch_opo…

Kamala Harris just arrived back in LA and the first thing she did was stop to help at a World Central Kitchen that is serving food to families who have been impacted by the wildfires. She’s a real leader. This is what we could’ve had, America.

Trump has fallen below 50% in the popular vote. His margin of victory (pop vote + electoral college) is the third smallest since 1888. (Only JFK in '60 and Nixon in '68 were smaller.) If 238k votes in the blue wall states had been different, he would have lost. Not a mandate.

The media used dishonest tactics to force an incumbent President out of the race with 100 days left, while giving a free pass to a recently convicted felon who was actually senile, because it wanted the ratings. If you’re not blaming the media, I don’t know what to tell you.
