When Tetsuya Naito and BUSHI captured the GHC Tag Team Championships, they were not the wrestlers with links to New Japan to claim the belts. On 30 November 2003, in Sapporo, Yuji Nagata and Hiroshi Tanahashi dethroned Kenta Kobashi and Tamon Honda to become GHC Tag Team Champions. It was the first time in the title's history that wrestlers from a different promotion had claimed the gold. The context makes it all the more fascinating. NJPW was entering a period of decline, yet both men were carrying the promotion on their backs. Nagata was the IWGP Heavyweight Champion. Tanahashi was in the middle of a breakout year: the U-30 Openweight Championship in April, the IWGP Tag Team titles in June and now GHC gold before the year was out. Their reign was brief as Mitsuharu Misawa and Yoshinari Ogawa reclaimed the belts on 10 January 2004, but the victory served its purpose. It was another stepping stone on the road that would eventually see Tanahashi later play his part in dragging NJPW back to the glory years. Where these men stand today tells its own story. Tanahashi is now the President of New Japan, having retired from active competition at the Tokyo Dome on 4 January. Nagata, at 57, is still competing and chasing the record for the oldest IWGP champion in history. As Naito and BUSHI continue their reign, the GHC Tag Team Championship's cross-promotional history is richer than many people remember.
