January 9, 1936 — The U.S. Army adopts the M1 semi-automatic rifle, designed by John C. Garand, as its new standard-issue service weapon.
On January 9, 1936, the United States Army officially adopted the M1 Garand, a decision that would go on to redefine the American infantryman’s role in the wars to come.
Designed by John C. Garand, a Canadian-born engineer working at Springfield Armory, the rifle gave U.S. soldiers a significant firepower advantage at a time when many other armies still depended on bolt-action weapons.
The M1 was semi-automatic, allowing soldiers to fire successive shots without manually cycling the bolt after each round. It used an eight-round en-bloc clip and was chambered for the powerful .30-06 cartridge. This made it fast, dependable, and highly effective at typical combat ranges.
By the time the United States entered World War II, the M1 had become one of the signature weapons carried by American troops across both Europe and the Pacific. General George S. Patton famously called it “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” highlighting its impact on modern warfare and the growing importance of speed and sustained firepower.
Despite its success, Garand did not become wealthy from his invention. As a government employee, the design belonged to the U.S. government, and he received only his standard salary rather than royalties.
