In a heart-rending moment, preterm babies who had been evacuated from a Gaza hospital and moved to Egypt for safety during the Israel-Hamas war were finally reunited with their mothers after two years as part of a United Nations mission reut.rs/4bQ6wmM

There are things in this world that should never happen
and yet, they are happening.
This story sounds like fiction.
But this is our life.
Two and a half years ago, when the Israeli army entered Al Shifa Hospital,
they took a number of newborn babies from the maternity ward.
Newborns.
They were separated from their mothers, from the only warmth they had ever known and sent to Egypt.
Without names.
Without families.
Without anyone to claim them.
They disappeared.
For more than a year, there was no news.
No answers.
No certainty about whether they were even alive.
Yesterday, some of them were returned.
And I cannot stop thinking about one moment.
A mother standing there.. trying to describe her child.
Describing the face of a baby she had only known for less than a week.
Trying to recognize her own son through memory alone.
Through fragments.
Through hope.
Through pain.
Then, suddenly.. he is in front of her.
Alive.
She breaks.
A joy so overwhelming it almost looks like grief.
And the child?
He looks at her .. without recognition. Without memory.
Without the instinct that should have guided him back to her arms.
He does not know her !!
And perhaps what is even more devastating
he does not know what a mother is.
What kind of world separates a child from his mother
before he even learns her face?
What kind of war steals not only lives,
but the most basic human bonds?
This is not just loss.
This is something deeper.
Something colder.
Something that tears at the very meaning of being human.
This ..
is what hell looks like.

During his illness, Stephen Lewis spent what little energy he had, protesting Israel’s genocide in Gaza. This fact will most likely be missing from most remembrances of him today. Canada lost a giant of humanity and social justice. Sending love to @avilewis & entire family.

A 13 year-old boy was assaulted in front of his family as they were leaving the Toronto Islamic Centre after prayers. As a dad of a daughter the same age, that angers me to the core. Another member of the congregation was reportedly punched as they were walking home. This is the same mosque that was targeted with racist and Islamophobic remarks and violent threats earlier this year. Our city’s Muslim community, along with the Jewish community and all communities, must always be able to practice their faith, be who they are and come together, peacefully and safely. I’m committed to continue working to build bridges and understanding. I have also been calling for all laws to be fully and effectively enforced to protect our communities from harassment, intimidation, hate, and violence. Let’s support the Toronto Islamic Centre’s congregation and let them know we stand with them. Ramadan Mubarak.

The mother of Mikaeil Mirdoraghi, a third-grade student grade student killed in U.S. airstrike on primary school in Minab:
I had prepared dinner for him and when he was eating he said: “Mom, the food you made tastes like heaven.”
I said: “My son, why are you saying this? You’ve never said this before.”
Around midnight he put pillows around himself and sat with his brother. He said: “Brother, let’s play. I’m Iran and you’re America. Let’s play with guns and tanks.”
They started playing together. He said: “See, Iran won? Brother, Iran won. I was Iran and I won.” My son said Iran was the winner.
All these things seemed to be inspired to him that night. He did all of this the night before his martyrdom.
He also prayed and read the Quran that night.
In the morning he said: “Mom, take a picture of me.”
This child was an angel. He used to say: “My name is Mikaeel. Mikaeel means God’s angel. If anyone has a wish, tell me so I can fulfill it.”
God loved him too and took him to Himself.
It is true, exactly like that. It was the heartless America that launched a missile at this school where there was nothing suspicious. I myself lived in Minab for four years.
They just wanted to kill our children.
