Police at OR Tambo International Airport have arrested a 26-year-old Brazilian national after intercepting cocaine with an estimated street value of R8.7 million. The suspect was apprehended on Sunday afternoon shortly after arriving on a flight from Brazil, following an intelligence-driven operation by SAPS officers stationed at the airport. During a search of the traveller’s luggage, police discovered multiple blocks of cocaine that had been wrapped and concealed inside the bags. Authorities said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt transnational drug trafficking syndicates using South Africa’s busiest port of entry as a route for smuggling narcotics. Police added that officers at OR Tambo have achieved several recent successes in detecting and arresting suspected traffickers, dealing significant blows to the illicit drug trade and broader organised crime networks. The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, where charges of drug trafficking are expected to be formally presented.
