he uses this persona SPECIFICALLY because he's afraid and because he can use this to avoid the things he's afraid of instead of admitting fear and weakness. this probably was the origins of the asshole persona as well: a way for him to avoid his social fears and anxieties

REWATCH UPDATE: this episode also shows troy reverting back to the asshole jock persona a bit more harshly than in the last few episodes--he's a dick to abed on purpose and does everything he can to avoid the entire fievel situation. (con't -->)
