On this day 19 February 1942: In the largest single attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia. 242 Japanese aircraft, in two separate raids, attacked the town & ships in Darwin Harbour and the town's airfields. 236 people were killed. #bombingofdarwin #wwii #ww2

When Japanese aircraft attacked Darwin on 19 February 1942, AA gunner Wilbert Hudson was having a shower but rushed to his post and, balancing his Lewis gun on Tex Campbell's shoulder, hit a dive bomber "fair and square", bringing it to ground. Painting by Jeff Isaacs.
