Sword work from 2008/2009. #knifemaking #patternwelding #bladesmithing #knife #sword This is a WIP for a three-bar center (interrupted twisted/counter twist) sword with generous "separate" edge of homogenous 1086. Pic 1 is what the steel bundles look like that will make up the core/center of the sword. The white powder is borax (for flux ). I always do a couple spares. Pic 2. The bars are forge welded, drawn out, twisted and "counter-twisted" (twisted the opposite direction) with untwisted sections aligned with twisted section of the adjacent bar. Pic 3. Homogenous 1086 steel bar is fitted around the "core" of already welded twisted bars. Over the years I stopped using wire and steel bands for this part and opted for plates and screws as shown. This allowed the center to move a little relative to the fitted edge during the initial welding of the point, a highly critical operation. The plates are knocked off as you weld up the length of the sword. Pic 4. Homogenous edge is forge welded to the center "core" and the sword is ready for rough grinding. That is followed by heat treat and final grinding.

🧙‍♂️😁😁Here's what I did today. You might be wondering why he is so happy about a chunk of steel? Well, it was 7 pieces of mostly scrap pieces of steel to start with. #PatternWelding

…which can now usually only be seen thro’ x-radiography. At events last year at @NT_SuttonHoo team member Matthijs shared with audiences the fascinating story of AS blade-smithing, with insights gained from his own recently gained practical experience w/ #patternwelding. (4/11)
