The story of Major Dhan Singh Thapa is one of the most surreal accounts in Indian military history. On October 20, 1962, Major Thapa was commanding the Sirijap-1 post in Ladakh with just 28 Gorkha soldiers. They were facing a massive Chinese force that outnumbered them at least 20-to-1. Major Thapa jumped out of his trench and engaged the enemy in hand-to-hand combat, using his Khukri to kill several soldiers before being struck unconscious by a rifle butt and captured. Because his post was completely overrun and communication was dead, the Indian Army presumed every soldier at Sirijap-1 had been martyred. His family in Shimla even performed his last rites. The government announced his Param Vir Chakra. It was only when the Chinese finally released a list of prisoners through the Red Cross that the world realized the "Ghost of Sirijap" was still breathing. He was eventually released in May 1963 and returned home to his family. While in the Chinese camp, Major Thapa was subjected to intense physical and mental torture. His captors were particularly frustrated by him because his unit had inflicted heavy casualties on them. He was so defiant that the Chinese eventually categorized him as a "hardcore" prisoner who couldn't be broken by their indoctrination techniques He was brutally tortured, but even the enemy called him a “hardcore” soldier who couldn’t be broken! He came back from the dead and also earned the Param Vir Chakra.
