NBA NEC DEMANDS INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS BY “TIGER BASE” POLICE UNIT IN OWERRI The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), at its meeting held on Thursday, 7 May 2026 in Awka, Anambra State, adopted a resolution demanding an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation into allegations of gross human rights violations by the anti-kidnapping unit of the Imo State Police Command popularly known as “Tiger Base.” NEC noted disturbing reports by credible human rights organisations alleging that operatives of the unit have been involved in acts including extrajudicial executions, torture, extortion, and arbitrary detention of citizens. The Council expressed grave concern over reports suggesting that repeated calls for intervention and accountability regarding the activities of the unit have not received adequate response from relevant authorities. NEC emphasized that if established, such conduct constitutes serious violations of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, particularly the rights to life, dignity of the human person, personal liberty, and fair hearing. The Council reiterated the NBA’s position that no law enforcement agency or security outfit operates above the law and that allegations of abuse by security personnel must be investigated thoroughly and transparently. NEC therefore called on the Nigeria Police Force and relevant oversight institutions to immediately conduct an independent investigation into the allegations with a view to identifying and prosecuting all persons found culpable. The Council further stressed that accountability, transparency, and adherence to human rights standards remain indispensable to restoring public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
