ITALIAN MOTHER AND DAUGHTER AMONG FIVE DIVERS LOST FOREVER IN MALDIVES SHARK CAVE TRAGEDY 💔 A heartbreaking disaster unfolded in the Maldives last week. An Italian mother, her young daughter, and three others vanished during what was supposed to be a research dive but turned into a deadly cave exploration at extreme depths. Monica Montefalcone, a 52-year-old University of Genoa professor, her 20-year-old daughter Giorgia Sommacal, along with Muriel Oddenino, Federico Gualtieri, and instructor Gianluca Benedetti entered the dangerous Thinwana Kandu cave system near Vaavu Atoll. They went far beyond normal recreational diving limits, reaching areas around 160 to 200 feet deep in a site known for its hazards, narrow passages, and sharks. The group had official permission for coral reef studies but not for penetrating this high risk cave. Rough seas and poor visibility were already in effect when they went in. One by one their bodies were recovered days later by expert Finnish rescue divers who had helped in the famous Thailand cave rescue years ago. A brave Maldivian search diver, Mohamed Mahudhee, also lost his life to decompression sickness while trying to find them. This is now called the deadliest diving accident in Maldives history. The luxury yacht Duke of York that carried them has had its license suspended during the ongoing investigation. Twenty other Italian tourists on the same boat made it home safely. Extreme adventures demand respect for the limits of human capability and preparation. These families are left with unimaginable pain after pushing boundaries in one of the oceans most unforgiving environments. My deepest condolences and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of all those who perished in this tragedy. May they find strength and comfort in the days ahead.🙏 💔
