OK Red - you asked for it. My company has a home division in Ann Arbor (CCC) and a wholly owned sudsidiary (CP) in Prague. One of our main products are the eyelash actives that make lash serums give you the spectacular long dark and curvy lashes you crave. Under a regime where income taxes are the main tax vehicle, we have established a production system where the first 23 chemical synthetic steps, starting with cyclopentadiene, and performed in Prague. Then the intermediate compound is shipped to America (previously at no tariff) and the final 3 steps performed here by CCC. Suddenly, as of this spring, there was a 10% tariff and now a 15% tariff on this chemical as soon is it hits the shore. Fed Ex, who is shipping the compound, fronts this tariff at the Customs dock and then bills CCC for it along with the shipping invoice. So I have paid 15% tax, up front, without making any income yet. I cannot afford to increase the price of Maxeylash because I'm competing against big brands like Latisse and Revitalash, so I will just not make as much money any more. I will no longer be profitable. If you give me 20 years, I can build a copy of the CP complex in Prague here in Ann Arbor and perform all 26 steps here. The last major lab structure I built here cost $30 million and CCC is still staggering under that debt. So don't look for this to happen in the next decade. So - does it work? Well, what it does is squeeze an incredible amount of up front tax out of any business that imports anything. We are struggling to survive, we have laid off 10% of the workforce, and we will lose money this year. We stopped matching the employees' 401K contributions. I took a 40% pay cut. CCC will not pay any income tax because there isn't any net taxable income. On the other hand, 90% of us still have our jobs, and a bottle of Maxeylash still costs you exactly the same. Would you say that is working?

I asked this person to explain to me why she doesn't think Trump's tariffs will work. I'm sincere, because I don't know if they will or won't, I don't know enough about international commerce and the global economy to have any idea. She can't answer, just resorted to calling me insincere and then 'magat'. If someone else can explain why they will work, or why they won't work, I would appreciate an answer. We have to get past this knee jerk reaction of name calling and pigeon holing.
