I am deeply grateful for the messages I've received from all of you around the world who follow #Belarus. Your words were thoughtful, perceptive and clear-eyed. I've been moved to tears of happiness today, of course - but I cannot accept a reality in which a human being is being destroyed and exploited for gain. I am disgusted and I keep wondering how we ended up here, when this becomes treated as the new norm. It makes me angry, and it leaves me utterly exhausted.

Under @POTUS leadership, @johnpcoale has secured the release of more than 500 political prisoners in #Belarus — including 250 today. This is hard, relentless work and a truly major achievement by the 🇺🇸 administration. Big time. I’m enormously grateful to Mr. Coale and DAS Chris Smith for their titanic efforts.

Sanctions were lifted on the Finance Ministry, Belinvestbank, & the Development Bank, along with the removal of all remaining sanctions on potash companies Belaruskali, Belarusian Potash ‌Company, & Agrorozkvit. But sadly #Belarus has done nothing to justify such a windfall./2

#Belarus Mikita Zalatarou was only 16 when he was arrested. He's been released only now. He was in a hospital right before his release and it was also reported that he tried to end his life behind bars. He was beaten and has epilepsy.

I'm thinking today about Mikalai Statkevich, who dedicated his health to fighting for people's right to remain in #Belarus if they choose, without facing deportation. He suffered a stroke while behind bars and was denied medication.

#Belarus On sanction relief for banks controlled by the regime - what this will facilitate is transactions involving dual-use goods, including with military applications. Keep this in mind and be clear about what's happening. More focus on EU sanctions and closing loopholes.

The release of 250 political prisoners in Belarus is a welcome and tangible step forward. I thank the United States for brokering this deal. For many families, this is a moment of long-awaited relief and a chance to reunite with their loved ones. We can't overlook that these individuals should never have been imprisoned in the first place. All those still unjustly detained in Belarus must be freed, and repression must end.
