Thread: Seriously cool. To me, the the coolest is the number 15. Let me explain why:
Archaeology & Art@archaeologyart

Saimaluu-Tash Petroglyphs, Kyrgyzstan. Period: circa 2400-900 BC (Bronze Age). Location: Saimaluu-Tash, Fergana Range, Jalal-Abad Region (Toguz-Toro District), Kyrgyzstan Photo: UNESCO. Military topographer Nikolai Khludov was the first to spot these petroglyphs while mapping the postal route between Naryn and Andijan in 1902. When he heard from locals about stones covered in drawings, Khludov hiked up to the site and reported his findings to the Turkestan Circle of Archaeology Enthusiasts. After that, however, the area was largely forgotten for nearly half a century. B.M. Zima later conducted comprehensive research in 1946, followed by A.N. Bernshtam in 1950. Even though the 25 figures in the panel have varying details, the vast majority share a common look: a human torso topped with a circular, rayed head. (in figure 25, the head is heart-shaped and decorated with internal motifs.) The figures' arms are usually spread out to the sides or raised upward, while some are positioned as if they're holding an object. Sun-headed figures aren't exclusive to Saimaluu-Tash. In neighboring Kazakhstan, the Tamgaly (Tanbaly) petroglyphs feature sun-headed deity (?) figures from the same period with similar iconography. Further east, sun-rayed heads also appear on stone stelae of the Okunev culture (c. 2700-1800 B.C) in Russia's Khakassia region. This wide geographic spread shows us that a shared solar cult existed among the communities sharing the Central Asian steppes and mountains during the Bronze Age. UNESCO added the site to its World Heritage Tentative List in 2001, but it hasn't been officially inscribed yet.

This is an excellent point and thread. Cartoons do involve simplification, but they also involve exaggeration that only comes from intimate familiarity. Honoré Daumier is more a cartoonist than, say, what you find in those shitty "flat design" graphics x.com/neogeo8man/sta…
tapir mutant@neogeo8man

it's bad because it uses "cartoony" to mean "simplified". by this standard XKCD is "cartoonier" than Rod Scribner animation and no I'm not just being pedantic. McCloud is a guy who said he studied Tezuka for eons, yet he always sucked at drawing cartoony x.com/ConRayArt/stat…

The best thing about @frazettagirls is every now and then, they share a Frazetta masterpiece that I've never seen before. This is a feast for the eyes.

Frank Frazetta
Frank Frazetta@frazettagirls·
Frank Frazetta’s original cover painting for Vampirella #1 sold today at Heritage Auctions for $3,125,000, underscoring the enduring market power of an image that helped define late-1960s horror publishing. When the magazine appeared on newsstands in 1969, the cover functioned as immediate introduction. Vampirella arrived, equal parts sexy and dangerous, and the image quickly became one of the most recognizable visual statements of the era. In 1991, Frazetta sold the painting to a private collector under a specific condition: he would first alter it. Frank, who had long expressed dissatisfaction with the character’s costume, removed it before completing the sale,  a decision consistent with his occasional practice of revisiting earlier works. The revision has since shaped discussion around the painting, particularly as its market value has climbed. Whether the work might have achieved an even stronger result in its original published state remains a matter of speculation.  The possibility of restoration is often raised, but the issue is not purely technical. Frazetta’s preference was explicit, and his involvement in the alteration complicates any attempt to return the image to its earlier form, a likely reason such a restoration has never been undertaken. More than three decades later, the painting’s impact remains unchanged. Whatever version one considers definitive, the image continues to stand as the moment Vampirella entered popular culture  and as another example of Frazetta’s ability to establish an icon in a single frame. #Vampirella

I'm sure writing is much older than we currently know. Perhaps tens of thousands of years old actually. Consider most of writing is done on cheap materials that don't preserve well. Typically, papyrus, paper, bark, or animal skin wouldn't survive even 10,000 years.
The Mind Scourge@TheMindScourge

Things looking really good for the bet @SamoBurja made regarding how civilization is older than we believe “Prehistory” turns out to be much more interesting and complicated than we appreciated Looking at it more broadly, anthropology has been one of the most exciting domains of knowledge the past few decades. Basically everything I was taught when I was in undergrad turns out to be either wrong or woefully incomplete. We will look back on this period for anthropologists much like we do with the early to mid 20th century physicists: a golden age of discovery

When we find the remains of beavers, we assume that they built dams, even if we don’t see any dams nearby. But when we find human skeletons, we imagine them naked, without shelter, feasting on berries, and without social order. This is driven more by ideology than reality. 1/n
