The Amur Leopard is hunted for its beautiful coat, while its habitat is being destroyed by human development. Fewer than 130-150 are believed to remain in the wild. 😢 #InternationalLeopardDay 🐆. 🎦 Credit: Unknown (DM for credit).

Silent, intelligent, and incredibly adaptable, leopards are among India’s most fascinating wild cats. This #InternationalLeopardDay, we celebrate these elusive big cats and the importance of protecting them in a rapidly changing world. Wildlife SOS's Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre (MLRC) is home to rescued leopards that can no longer survive in the wild due to injuries, conflict situations, or other challenges. Here, each leopard receives specialised care, nutritious diets, medical attention, and large naturalistic enclosures designed to encourage their natural behaviours and provide them with the space they need. The Indian leopard remains one of the country's most wide-ranging big cats, often persisting in agricultural and human-use landscapes beyond protected areas. Listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, this adaptability, however, also places the species in close proximity to threats that require sustained monitoring, rapid rescue response and public awareness. In frame: Aditi and Shivashree enjoying their playful moments together. 💚🐆

A quick introduction to some of the youngest members of our extended Ithumba family. Yatta, a poaching orphan rescued in 1999, seen here chaperoning her own daughter Yara and Kinna's daughters Kito and Kama. Yara – born 29th March 2025 to Yatta, her fourth calf. Hours after giving birth, Yatta brought her to Ithumba to meet the herd. Her name means 'small butterfly' in Arabic. Kito – born 6th December 2024 to Kinna, meaning 'precious jewel' in Swahili. Kinna arrived at the Nursery in October 1999 after being found stuck in a waterhole in Meru National Park. She is now one of Ithumba's founding females – a wild matriarch with three daughters by her side. Kito is the 68th known wild-born calf to an orphan raised through our Orphans' Project. Kama – Kinna's eldest daughter, born 2017, now eight years old and already fiercely protective of her baby sister Kito. And it all started with a rescue. With every orphan we save, we secure generations to come. Become part of our legacy: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans

Bram would like to let you know he’s bagged himself a foster! 🥳 Which if he plays his cards right might possibly turn into a home trial 💜 It’s with Dena and Matt who adopted Annie, Million and Toby from us and foster other frightened dogs like Liberty for us too. We are going to visit and make a video about why rescuing has become Dena’s passion. Put your best paw forward Bram and be good!! Please wish him good luck 🤞

Often, an orphan will rejoin the wild with their friends – forming herds, or joining others that made the journey before them. Not Ziwa. He's a peacemaker, but had something of a tempestuous relationship with his peer Faraja, who was his polar opposite. We weren't sure how the situation would resolve – but Ziwa found a way. He took it upon himself to establish a relationship with a wild family of elephants, who adopted him as their own. Ziwa still visits, in the company of his new family, who drop him off and then hang around until he's ready to leave. He's always been like that – loyal. As a two-year-old in Amboseli, he stood guard over his dying mother in a waterhole, keeping the hyenas at bay until the rescue team arrived. Reacquaint yourself with Ziwa's story: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/ziwa

Ears out, tail swinging – Kaikai is on a mission. And then, just like that, she runs out of steam and plonks down for an impromptu dust bath and siesta!  When she arrived in our care, we knew we were in for an uphill battle. An orphaned newborn, she was confused and missing her mother, spending her first nights pacing her stable and crying. We assigned two of our most experienced Keepers to her care, and as the days and weeks unfolded, Kaikai started to heal from her emotional trauma. Today? She is full of mischief and growing by the day.

The moment Eli Sharabi, who was held hostage in Gaza, told the UN the truth. "NO ONE in Gaza helped me. I was treated worse than animal. The civilians saw us suffering and they cheered our kidnappers. They were definitely involved." Share this. The mainstream media won't.
