One artist whose work I love and discovered recently is Hiroshi Furuyoshi. I found him through the Beautiful Bizarre magazine, which I highly recommend.

I will soon be going on a trip to Paris. I’ve visited repeatedly before, but what is a less known thing to do or see there that you recommend? I always tell people to visit Magasin Sennelier, which created oil pastels for Picasso, and to visit Père Lachaise Cemetery.

@getty_a96716 @SketchesbyBoze @nguyenhdi Wanting to insert modern slang language into the classics is in itself a weird pathology of our times. The classics do not need to be relatable and easy to read.

@iconawrites @SketchesbyBoze @nguyenhdi If he were complaining only of the language, you’d be correct. By including “the pathologies” he makes it clear that he thinks modern pathologies were inserted ideologically into an Ovid translation. They were not, he’s quite aware of every single one of them.

Picked up this copy of "The Art of Love" but I had to quit after several pages. The translator used phrases like "girlfriend", "safe sex", "one-night stand", etc. This is Ovid!

@iconawrites I always wondered why Americans were so into visiting Père Lachaise, they are a million other things to do in Paris. You can’t go wrong by going to any kind of museum there, they have amazing treasures.

It’s OVID, of course the content is sexual), while actually your issue is with the use of millennial slang in translations of the classics (the reason why I now only read French and Italian translations).

@nguyenhdi Truly infuriating. I read old books to escape from the language and pathologies of the present day.

@UnRecondYankee He does not really know how to cook anymore, as I have been doing the cooking myself for years now. He does other things.

@iconawrites To be fair, depending on what part of England he's from, he might be capable of a really excellent meat pie.

As an Italian, I may not allow my English husband/English people in my kitchen nor let them pick the art on the walls, but I’m still much kinder to them than the French are. When they want to roast them, they truly show no mercy.

If you are learning to draw, you should check out Peter Han’s Dynamic Bible (he’s got some good lectures on YouTube, too). It’s an excellently written, clear, structured resource for beginners. It looks so beautiful, too!

My wish for you is that you will find a book series that grips you as much as your childhood favourites, that makes you want to stay up all night reading it as though you were a kid again, falling in love with the magic of stories for the first time.

Many people nowadays read what the algorithm suggests to them, but there is nothing like walking in a bookshop, browsing the shelves, and casually stumbling upon a niche book you never knew you needed, but which will change your life.

If you draw or paint or design, a colour wheel can be such a useful tool for picking and mixing colours. One of the most useful things I own!

Some people see them as outdated because they were published in the 1930s, but I think some of Andrew Loomis’s books are still a great resource for learning how to draw. This one is called Fun with a Pencil.

@iconawrites The lamas of Tibet say visitors to their gompas in the shadow of Everest used to recite holy prayers. Now instead they play games and chat on their phones. There's no respect for contemplation, for silence.

When I was a child in Italy (a long time ago now), I remember being at some sort of Catholic summer camp. In the afternoon the boys went off to do woodworking, while we girls sat embroidering with the nuns. I have an inkling that this is somewhat not a common practice anymore.
